Stop Glaring!

Question: My company exhibits products with metallic finishes that glare under the booth lights. How can I reduce the glare and present our products in a better light?

Answer: Products with shiny surfaces often produce harsh reflections from light sources, reducing visibility and causing reflections. Reflected glare gives the appearance of hot spots on an object's surface. Veiling reflections can also obscure graphics or text.

Here are some suggestions for reducing glare:

  • Reduce the quantity of light from a single source. If the lights are not too bright, the reflections will look more like sparkle than glare.
  • Work with the angle of your light source. For example, when lighting signage or products, consider the location of the light in relationship to the viewer. Locate the light so it reflects away from the viewing angle.
  • Add glare-reduction devices, such as retrofit louvers, barn doors, baffles, or screens, to your light sources. These devices will help control glare by diffusing the light or reducing brightness from the side.
  • Adjust the lighting prior to the show to see exactly how your customers will view your products.
